1.- Advantages of a woollen blanket!

Woollen blankets last longer. No other fibre surpasses the flexibility of wool fibre. Therefore, because of its suppleness, woollen blankets keep their softness and shape for years and years.

Wool fibre is tubular and fleecy, qualities that confer insulating capacities and help keep bodily warmth. As woollen blankets are thermal they retain great quantities of air among their fibres.

Wool being hygroscopic absorbs the humidity of the body freely allowing the flow of perspiration and, as it prevents the disagreeable sensation of sweating, it gives a pleasant feeling of dry warmth, that provides comfort for a sound sleep.

It is fire retarding, and so a safe product.

2.- Is a synthetic or acrylic fibre blanket equal to a woollen blanket?

Certainly not, they are beyond comparison, synthetic material will never surpass the comfort, warmth and safety of a woollen blanket. This is easily explained by the general characteristics of wool: hygroscopic qualities, great capacity for air retention, resistance to friction, fire retardation and durability.

3.- Why do some people talk about thermal blankets?

It is a mistake to speak about thermal blankets as one more article among the existing range of blankets. All blankets are thermal in a bigger or smaller degree in accordance to the capacity of holding more or less air in the fibres they are made of. Greater the quantity of air, greater will be its warmth. Its thermal quality is also deeply related to the structure of its weave, because a double-faced blanket holds more air than a single-faced one.

4.- What is the difference between a double-faced blanket and a single-faced one?

A double-faced blanket, as its name says, is one that possesses a double weave, that is to say one weave laid over another, thus enabling it to retain more air between the two layers and so it is more thermal than a blanket with one weave or single-faced.

5.- Why are wool and synthetic fibres sometimes used together?

Fibres such as nylon, acrylic and polyester are often woven with wool either to improve their quality or to achieve decorative effects, as well as to lower costs. It is important to know that in these mixed textures the woollen fibres lose none of their assets. But in general, the article loses a percentage of the positive quality of the wool.

6.- Can there be 100% woollen blankets?

Blankets are made up of woof and warp. The woof is the principal part of the texture and can be 100% wool. On the other hand, nowadays the warp generally made of polyester, is the main structure that holds up the woof and, according to the weight of the article represents from 4% to 10% of the whole weight. Therefore when a blanket is mentioned to be 100% woollen, the percentage regarding the warp is omitted.
